Ordinary Seaman Herbert H. Bayne
Ordinary Seaman Herbert H. Bayne, or Bert as he is known was just 17 years old when he walked over the gangway to board HMS/M Unbeaten in late 1942. The U-Class submarine N93, was the young man's first sea draft. Bert had completed his basic training and just finished his trade training. Herbert was a qualified Radio Direction Finder (RDF) operator, or what today would be known as a RADAR operator.
As fate would have it, Bert along with the rest of the crew of Unbeaten never returned from the submarines last clandestine patrol.
The author is very grateful to Derek Bayne, Bert's brother, for all the contributions he has made towards the book. Derek's input has added greatly to the historical accuracy of the story of Unbeaten and her crew.
Below is a very recent post left by Derek Bayne about 'Being Silent They Speak.

'Only a Submariner who has undertaken hazardous patrols in
a theatre of war can understand the pressure and restrictions that are imposed on members of the crew. Being Silent They Speak gives the reader the opportunity to experience the atmosphere aboard HMS/M Unbeaten'
Thank you Derek.
