It was Saturday the 19th of April 1941. Unbeaten surfaced to brilliant sunshine, in sight of the looming Rock of Gibraltar. She had successfully crossed the Bay of Biscay. Unbeaten was berthed alongside the submarine depot vessel HMS Maidstone for 4 days. This allowed the crew time to top up stores, wash cloths and themselves. It also gave the men a chance to go ashore and sample the sights and delights of Gibraltar. The rock was heaven for a well-travelled and thirsty sailor. Gibraltar was, and still is, very popular for another reason. This is due to its immensely strategically important location, watching over the entrance to the Mediterranean. Unbeaten slipped from the Maidstone on the 23rd of April 1941. She steered a course towards the Mediterranean, an on to the besieged small island of Malta. N93 would not return to Gibraltar for just under a year. This final visit would be due to several very different circumstances.
