It was my very great pleasure, this past weekend, to finally meet the daughter of one of the crew of HMS/M Unbeaten. The Unbeaten is the U-Class submarine featured in the successful book & eBook titled 'Being Silent They Speak'.
Margaret Donothey, née Piper, is the daughter of the late LS (Tel) Albert E. Piper, who is an extended family member of mine, being my wife's Great Uncle. Albert Piper was the catalyst for the book ‘Being Silent They Speak’. Margaret and her husband John travelled down to Plymouth to meet their recently discovered extended family. Margaret met with two cousins whom she has never seen and chatted with other family members including myself.
It was really great for me to meet Margaret and was a moment I will never forget. It transpires that my book brought the two families together again after over 70 years since HMS/M Unbeaten disappeared. For that reason I am very proud.
When writing 'Being Silent They Speak' I was always mindful of portraying a family member in my book. I wanted to gain permission of all the immediate families of the crewmen whom I mentioned in detail. I never thought I would find Margaret. So I was very surprised when Margaret contacted me through a website where I had posted a contact request. It was a shock for both of us, but a great one!
