A Faithful Replica of Unbeaten's Jolly Roger
The David J.B. Smith replica of HMS Unbeaten's Jolly Roger was made by the author to promote his 2012 book about Unbeaten. David was trained as a sailmaker in the Royal Navy and used his skills to manufacture this flag. David is seen (Photo left) at a book signing at the War & Peace Festival in September 2015.
All parts of this replica are made from original World War Two era signal flags. This method was used by the sailors who created original Jolly Rogers on board their submarines. The symbols used have been researched using the war patrol diaries of Unbeaten and are a 100% faithful representation.
The success detail is also confirmed by comparing the flag with the last photograph of Unbeaten's Jolly Roger (Right below). At the War & Peace book signing the Jolly Roger gained a lot of interest, especially from one person in particular who took plenty of photographs of it. The photos were taken supposedly so the person could replicated the image on his World War Two jeep. It is thought that all other replicas have been manufactured using this flag as a template, owing to their striking similarity.
